I received an e-mail from Michael Thibodaux, whose father had worked at the construction yard where Argus Island was built, prior to shipping to Bermuda. He sent 3 photos, and a brief description of the construction yard. See Argus Island - Before the Beginning.

Cheryl Hayward-Chew contacted me to jog my memory that her grand-father, Henry Hayward, had a nickname "Slim". As soon as I read her e-mail. I knew that she was correct, and that gem had been buried in the recesses of my mind for so many years. I take small consolation in the fact that his other nickname "Dark Ages" was used only at SOFAR, (where I was in constant contact with Henry), whereas the nickname "Slim" was common among his family and friends outside work, where I had very little contact. I have amended the entries on the website.

June 2023.
I received 2 nice e-mails from Kerry Abukhalaf, who is Frank Watlington’s grand-daughter. She recently received some memorabilia from her mother, Diana Watlington, (Frank’s daughter), which contained some photos that Frank had taken in 1970 of some of the staff at SOFAR.
These photos, of Leon Ingham, Brian Turner, Brian Patterson, Tom Graves, Miles Mayall, Peter Grayston, Marvin Drake and Henry Hayward, have been added to the relevant pages under the ‘Team’ tab.
Kerry mentioned that, in her spare moments, she has been delving further into the cartons of memorabilia, and mentioned that there were some boxes of magnetic tapes containing some of Frank’s whale recordings. This instantly piqued my interest, because there had recently (a couple of years ago) been some keen interest in obtaining recordings of some underwater explosions which were detonated near Perth, Australia in 1960. (See Perth Bermuda Experiment Part 1.) I asked her to have a look at the tapes to see if there was anything from 1960, but, alas, no such luck. This incident therefore, coincidentally, reminded me that I have an unfinished posting of P-B Experiment Part II, which I will complete and post shortly, and the mystery of the importance of any recordings of the 1960 explosions will be revealed.

There has been an addition to the ‘Fun Facts - Long Routes’ tab, which pinpoints the location of Point Nemo. Here's your chance to relax and get away from it all.

We have a winner!!
Way back in 2014, I challenged anyone to provide the names of the unidentified people in a photo of the staff at the Canary Island station. The photo also showed a dog, and I offered bonus points to anyone who could name the dog! A lady called Ana Rodriguez, e-mailed me, giving me the names of several of the people in the photo, as well as the dog! Thank you, Ana, for uncovering a little bit more of the history of SOFAR from 60 years ago! See Ana’s photo here. (Scroll to the bottom of the page)

Life at Tudor Hill.
In August 2019, I received a couple of e-mails from James Baker, recounting some of his experiences at Tudor Hill, and his memories of Frank Watlington, Albert Bruce Paynter and Richard Lambert, all of whom transferred from SOFAR to Tudor Hill in the early ‘70s. The e-mails got buried in my to-do file, and it wasn’t until recently when James contacted me that I ‘re-discovered’ them. I have James’s permission to publish them here (with slight editing). If any readers have any comments or further additions to James’ commentary, – or if you wish to contact James directly, - please let me know at info@sofarbda.com.

With sadness.
Bill Adams passed away in September last year, after a long and active life.
As a teenager, in 1944, he joined the Royal Navy, and was stationed ashore at HMNB Portsmouth in England, in support of the D-Day invasion and subsequent flow of supplies to Europe. Back in Bermuda, he soon caught the attention of Gordon Hamilton, who needed an aggressive jack-of -all-trades with seafaring, mechanical, and electrical experience, to undertake the deployment of the SOFAR hydrophones, and manage the fleet of small boats that SOFAR acquired over the years.
Gerry Ryan also passed away recently. Whenever Sir Horace Lamb left the dock, Gerry would be on board in some capacity or another, Over the years, he worked his way up from Engine Room Assistant to Captain.

Welcome.
It is always nice when people who have a connection with SOFAR or PGI find the website, and get in contact. Such was the case recently when Bonnie Eccleston (now Falkner) sent a message about her employment at SOFAR.
Bonnie was the 'keeper of the vault' and assistant to Marvin Drake. Her responsibilities included collecting Confidential and Secret messages from Kindley Air Force Base, and disposing of outdated information by burning it in the 55-gallon drums located near the gate.
She now lives in Menifee, Ca. 92586.

The post about the Perth/Bermuda Experiment (Link here) has been cleaned up a bit, had some maps added (Link here). It is now located under the major tab 'EVENTS'.
... and don't miss the 'fun fact' - a couple of great ideas for your next vacation!!
A great photo has been added near the bottom of the Tudor Hill page, as well as a couple of links to a video and a related website.
A diagram about how SMILS worked, with some explanatory notes, has been added. Click here, and then scroll to the bottom of the page.

After nearly 4 years pursuing other things, and getting a few ducks in a row, I now have the time do devote to the website.
The most recent addition came as an e-mail from Bill Payne, who was at PGI in Florida from 1992 to 1995. Included was a nice photo of the Staff at PGI in 1993, with a few familiar faces from my Bermuda days - Tom Graves, Pat McClure, Paul Inman, and Kevin Laudadio, perhaps others.
So, I have added a new page - PGI Florida - in the 'Places' tab. Check it out here.
Also included is the 1995 telephone directory.

Norah McDaniel found the website, and as a result, I am delighted that she identified one of the 'unknown' crew members of the first voyage of Sir Horace Lamb as her husband, John McDaniel.

June 2015.
An Apology for the delay.
I encountered some corruption problems with the website, which took quite a while to resolve, and (hopefully) all is now well. In addition, I have become actively involved in a project which has seen the banning of the importation of genetically engineered seeds (GMO)s into Bermuda, and, more recently, a temporary banning of the importation of glyphosate herbicides (e.g. Roundup, Rodeo) into Bermuda, pending further research into its harmful effects. All this has been quite time-consuming.
I received a message from Edward Mead Stovell, who worked with Hugh Paterson on SHL during the later years. I am grateful to him for identifying himself on the 'Smiler Carlington Retirement Party' photo.
Mr. Charles Barnard contacted me about an interesting 'artifact'. He and his parents lived next door to George Taggett in the '70s. At some point George gave Charles' father a plaque - the Sir Horace Lamb crest. Charles is wondering if anyone can shed any light on it's history. Have a look, and let us know your thoughts. Charles has donated it to The Bermuda National Museum in the name of his father.
Peter Olander has provided a couple of photos of Sir Horace.
'Tudor Hill' was a highly classified complex of research and applied underwater acoustics. There were a few connections between Tudor Hill and SOFAR, as outlined here.
David Williams also discovered the website, and has offered some interesting observations on his short time serving on Sir Horace Lamb.

October 2014 Mini-Update.
I had a very successful visit to Bermuda, meeting many familiar faces, some after a 50 year gap, as well as a few SOFAR family members I had never met before. I collected a lot of information - I only hope I can recall it all well enough to report here.
One of the reasons for choosing September for the visit is that there is an Annual Reunion event for any US Navy personnel who were ever stationed in Bermuda, organized by a remarkable lady, Renee Nunn, who should be hired by the Bermuda Tourism Authority for her energy and enthusiasm in promoting Bermuda to the Navy veterans. I met Renee for an hour (too short!), but unfortunately was unable to meet with any of the other attendees - our busy schedules just didn't quite mesh. Maybe next year!!
I did, however, visit TUDOR HILL. More later.
Another reason for the visit was to meet with Dr. Ed. Harris, who is the Executive Director of the Bermuda National Museum (formerly the Maritime Museum).
In June of this year, Dr. Harris published an article in the Royal Gazette suggesting that Bermuda's forts should be renovated and converted into small museums as tourist attractions. (See http://www.royalgazette.com/article/20140628/ISLAND/140629708 )
I e-mailed him immediately and made him aware of the 'ready-made' exhibit available at SOFAR's Seismograph Station in Fort George, and offered to meet him there in September. So, along with Miles Mayall and Martin Brewer, I met with him and his archivists, at Fort George one afternoon, and had a good look at the equipment and paper records. I got the impression that he was quite impressed and intrigued with what was there!! He has agreed to take the seismometers over to Dockyard to be put in archival storage, and has contacted Lamont to see if they have any interest in the paper records. I took every opportunity to suggest to him that the "Story of SOFAR" needs to be told, and what better way than as an exhibit at the National Museum. I hope he got the message!
In addition to Martin & Miles, I visited with Nicky Pimentel, Bill Adams, Gerry Ryan, Peter Olander, Bill Andrews, Jan Card and Hugh Pateson of the Sofar generation, and met with Cindy Paynter O'Brien, Valerie Lobb Biscoe, Julie Lobb Preece of the next generation. Unfortunately, several people were off the Island, but I will get to them eventually!!
I collected a lot of information and photos, which I will be posting over the next while - there is too much for one post!!
. in other news...
Steve Underwood (1967-69) has joined the website, and is contacting his mother, Joyce, to make her aware of it. Steve wrote "I worked at SOFAR from ‘67 to ’69. I grew up in Bermuda. We moved there in 1956 when I was 5 yrs. old and left in 1969 to go back to Seattle to go the college."
Gordon Hamilton's webpage can be viewed here. I would appreciate it if anyone has any photos or other information about Ham to get in touch with me.

August 2014 Report.
Two more photos have been added to the Trident Flag Presentation page.
Ken Glanister has a few nice things to say about his time in Bermuda working with Nick Pimentel.
Tom Graves has supplied 3 great photos of the SOFAR Station in St. Davids, spanning the early 1950s to 1982.
Albert Bruce Paynter's daughter, Cindy O'Brien, discovered the website, and sent in a nice newsy e-mail.
George 'Butch' Kemper also discovered the website.
The Dress Code at St. David's was a bit lax. We wore what was comfortable, or appropriate for the task at hand. Apparently, the dress code at the Canary Islands site was different.
The End of an Era. The final brief chapter in the story of Argus Island
I find it interesting that things that happened at SOFAR years ago keep on popping up nowadays. Something that happened 64 years ago is 'of interest' today. Part one of a long ongoing story.

July 2014 Update, Part II.
I received a nice photo of Paul Inman from when he was stationed at the Canary Islands SOFAR Station.
Ken Glanister visited Bermuda in April, and took some interesting pictures at Ft. George Seismograph Station. Some exciting developements may be in the pipeline here!!
There is a new feature on 'The Team' page. There is a '(c)' next to the name of anyone with whom I am either in direct contact, or in contact with a close relative. Please use the 'Contact Us' button at the top of the page if you would like to contact a particular person or relative of that person.
Some modern day intrigue on a new page under the 'Fleet' tab about R.V. Vema.
Back in October 2013, there was a CBS 60 Minutes segment on Whales, with an 'Overtime' segment featuring Frank Watlington. I hope the link to CBS works - it has been a bit flakey in the past.
Rebecca, Robin & Greg liked to build tree forts. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page.)
There are 2 articles, one about 'Sir Horace' and the other about the St. David's Station.
. --==oo00OO00oo==--
July 2014 Early-Update.
Here is the Latest Report in the chapter on the 1964 Air Collision - in which Bill Adams is thanked for his help in trying to determine the location of the wreckage. Even 50 years on, SOFAR continues the good work!
There is a photo taken in 2001, and some information of John Strother.
The 'Places' tab now has a page for the SOFAR outpost in the Canary Islands. See if you can identify anyone in the photos!!
Since the late 1950's the Mount Hill BE Station (2600) has been used as the landside end of the Finish Line for the Newport/Bermuda & Marion Yacht races.

June 2014 Update.
A sad time for the families and loved ones of the victims of a tragic mid-air collision of 2 planes off Bermuda in 1964, (50 years ago) who will be visiting Bermuda for a Memorial Service and Re-union on June 26th – 29th.
SOFAR was involved in the rescue operation.
Marie McCann Johnson (Daughter of Capt. Clem McCann) forwarded a great photo of the crew of Sir Horace Lamb taken before the 1961 voyage ‘down South’.
Jim Graziano shows us what he was doing, when not working at SOFAR.
Wayne Bauer reminded me of an amusing incident that happened during “the Summer of ’67”.
Erik Piip sent an e-mail on a couple of topics, and included a couple of photos. Consequently, I would desperately love to get my hands on a working reel to reel tape recorder to play back (and transfer to MP3) the ¼” 7½ ips 7”reel that Erik has. If anyone knows of such an animal (anywhere in the world), please let me know.

MID-APRIL 2014 Update.
Long ovedue, again!
I am always pleased when a new person finds out about the website, and gets in contact. Bob Kessaram contacted me, and sent some info. See here.
All (hopefully) of the broken links on 'The Team' page have been repaired. You can now see the posts for Brian Turner and Frank Watlington. Also, Erik Piip and Ants Piip.
A contributor who, for obvious reasons, wishes to remain anonymous, has forwarded a story about the Girls in the Admin Office and the Guys in the Electronics shop.
There are 2 new photos, one in St. David's Headquarters, and the other in Fleet.
The saga of Argus Island continues, with an account and photos of The Power of The Ocean.
An article written by Mark Morrison for a ham radio magazine, featuring Frank Watlington and his whale recordings appears under News/Article.
Freelance has a couple of new photos.
I finally managed to find a couple of photos of a paravane - see half way down the page in TOTEM.
Photo Gallery has a photo of Tom and the Shark.
Finally, I was saddened to learn of the passing of Carl Hartdegen's wife, Mary, in December of last year. Her obituary can be found at http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/theroyalgazette/obituary.aspx?n=mary-payson-hartdegen&pid=170260998

Feb. 25th 2014Update.
This update is long overdue – I have been busy since the start of the year with personal business.
However, there was still time to make some additions and changes:-
‘The Team’ page now has several links to photos and stories about some of the people. This will be an ongoing process.
‘MILS’ and ‘SMILS’ have been added under the ‘Projects’ tab, with a photo of Bell, Laudadio & Graves on the P3 Orion.
Erik Piip, discovered the site, and provided a summary of his life at SOFAR and afterwards, in ‘Latest News’.
Mark Morrison also discovered the site, and provided a great picture for the new ‘SMILS’ tab.
Erik Piip has supplied photos of the ‘Grace’ and several other vessels, taken by his father, Ants Piip.
‘The Fleet’ has several group photos, while individual photos of ‘The Barge’, ‘Buoy Boat’ & ‘Mac-III’, have been provided by Tom Graves. Also,
‘Freelance’ has been added to ‘The Fleet’.
Enjoy!

Jan. 15th 2014 Update.
I have made a major change in the layout of the site – the tabs are now along the top of the page, which I am hoping will be more convenient.
There is a new sub-tab called ‘Previous Updates’ under the 'News' tab, into which past update notices are moved from the ‘Home Page’.
Valerie Lobb Biscoe sent a message, which appears in ‘here’.
There are 2 new photos on the ‘St. David’s Headquarters' Page.
‘B. E. Towers’ has a couple of photos of the Gibbs Hill location.
There are 3 new photos of the Big Gun – one very impressive one of a daytime firing – see the ‘Big Gun’ ‘Photos’ page.
‘Photo Gallery’ has a Bermuda Sun 1974 interview with Carl Hartdegen, with a few comments. (There is also a full transcript of the article for those who use handheld devices.)
One reader has asked for an explanation of the science underlying what we were doing. Here is the first in a series of posts. See the tab ‘Simple Science’ (which appears under the ‘More..’ tab).

There are 2 new photos on the ‘St. David’s Headquarters' Page.

There are 3 new photos of the Big Gun – one very impressive one of a daytime firing – see the ‘Big Gun’ ‘Photos’ page.

The Nov. 30th 2013 update:-
... contains many small corrections and additions which people have forwarded to me, for which I am very grateful. Please continue to point out any errors or missing data.
In addition, I have done some ‘re-arranging’ of the pages, which will hopefully make reading the entries more enjoyable.
There are several new topics:-
‘St. David’s Headquarters’ has several new photos.
‘Sir Horace Lamb’ has “A Conversation with Gerry Ryan.”
‘T-Boat’ has a new photo.
There is a photo of a Theodolite (a telescope on steroids!) in ‘B.E. Towers (Sofar Towers)’
Under ‘Projects’, there is a description of the ‘Big Gun’.
Under ‘Events’, there is a write-up on SOFAR’s involvement in researching the sinking of ‘USS Scorpion’.
Dianne Bauer-Icard has some recollections in the ‘Shout-Out’ tab.
There is a picture about SOFAR involvement in the Polaris operations under ‘Photo Gallery’, as well as a photo of ‘Smiler’ Carlington’s Retirement party.
I personally have several more stories to tell, as well as some things that others have sent, but I will eventually ‘run dry’, so please let me know about any experiences you (or your Mums or Dads) may have had while at SOFAR or PGI Florida.
