Some Comments:-
This is a great photo of Carl Hartdegen – and the one of Kevin & Miles is splendid too!
It is a pity that Carl’s name is mis-spelled throughout the article.
Some other comments, many (if not all) of which, I’m sure, are mis-reporting, rather than mis-statements by Carl:–
o The headline “Sofar to test the new long-range missile” sounds a bit like we were going to get out
our box of matches to light the fuse on our latest toy!
o I don’t believe any downed aircraft were ever ‘discovered’ (located) using the SOFAR system. The system
had been deployed and tested during the latter stages of World War II in the Pacific Ocean, but that war
ended quite abruptly in August 1945, before any actual ‘rescues’ took place.
o There is a photo of 2 Precision Depth Recorders (PDRs) in ‘Photo Gallery’ in the photo of ‘Brian Patterson
in the old Recording Room’. They are the 2 long cylindrical tubes in the foreground (immediately under
Brian’s feet). Anyone who sailed on Sir Horace will remember the sound of the ping at exactly one second
intervals – and the smell!
o I am not quite sure what kind of noise a 1000 pound inert bomb would make (other than a big splash, which
the technology of 1954 was incapable of hearing). Perhaps ‘obsolete’ or ‘surplus’ was the intended word!
Never believe everything you read in the press!
