E-mail news from Wayne Garrison.
I worked at the station from June 63 - June 64 - I was a gofer for Brian Patterson, he had me work on all kinds of projects. I had a great time during that year. The most interesting job interview I ever had was with Gordon Hamilton the station boss.
Some of the projects Brian Patterson had me work on:-
1. I would go over to St. George to get data about earthquakes so Brian could compare the seismograph data to the hydrophone sound arrival data.
2. We placed a seismograph unit off Bermuda for testing of the units that would end up being placed on the moon. We use the three tracking stations that had a spotting telescope that could be calibrated to insure it gave the correct bearing. There were three positions that we would man when placing or
retrieving equipment off Bermuda. St David's, Castle Harbor (Paynter’s Hill) and Gibbs Hill. We would spend hours looking thru the scopes and radioing the bearings. (The day president Kennedy was assassinated we were working with a nuclear submarine, I believe it was the George Washington. They called from the station to shut down and return to the station because the president had been shot.)
3. I am not sure but I think it was called missile impact locations system (?). This was work for the Navy to locate where the Polaris missile impacted into the ocean. We would get hydrophone data from stations around the Atlantic Ocean. We would run the data to see when the impact sound arrived at each hydrophone. Brian could use the arrival time to indicate where the Polaris impacted with great accuracy.
I am retired now and live in Nashville, TN
