John McDaniel
John's wife Norah writes:-
I have just found the Bermuda Sofar Station website and, in browsing through it, found that my husband, John McDaniel (dec.), does not appear to be mentioned. I found a picture under the article, R. V. Sir Horace Lamb, with a photo of the original crew who went to Chatanooga to collect her and sail her back to Bermuda. The unknown man kneeling in the front of the photo is “Johnny” McDaniel, (sometimes known in St. David’s as “Johnny Guest”). He was the first Captain of the Sir Horace, having been skipper of the T. boat after Bill Adams. Some years later he left to form the marine company, McDaniel & Wingood, with “Smokey Wingood, and they were very much involved in the Argus Island story. Johnny joined Sofar in 1957. I can’t remember the year he left, but I believe Peter Olander took over as captain then. Some of the names in Johnny’s crews that I can remember were Fanshaw Lamb, Nelson Lamb, Smiler Carlington, Bruce Paynter, Ron Firth, and Graham Lobb. Thurston Minors was always on call to do marine repairs, and Johnny also worked with Henry Hayward, Frank Watlington, Ray McAllister (who was prone to sea sickness as I recall), and Carl Hartdegen. I have many photos and clippings which I haven’t sorted through yet, but they are probably more about the company’s Argus Island work.
